REARING TO GO! - A Breech Birth Workshop - 2012 Programme

Women throughout New Zealand regularly report diminished or no support in obstetric hospitals to give birth, without surgical intervention, to their breech-presenting babies. An inability to find willing and skilled practitioners to support informed decision-making is frequently cited as the reason for ‘choosing’ Caesarean section.

The art of facilitating breech birth is a basic midwifery skill taught in undergraduate midwifery programmes. Increasingly, midwives are being called on to support women who plan vaginal breech birth when their breech-presenting babies are diagnosed in pregnancy.

Aims of this workshop

  • To develop a workable midwifery process in obstetric hospitals for women planning physiological breech birth, and
  • To ensure that the midwife’s practice reflects appropriate information-giving, consultation, labour and birth care planning and documentation practices for safe and effective midwifery care.

Facilitator
:
Maggie Banks RM, PhD, RGON

Maggie has a long-standing interest in breech presentation and birth and has written and lectured widely on the subject. Her book Breech Birth Woman-Wise is a valued text in midwifery and medical schools alike around the world. Participant Feedback:

“I feel much more confident to be with a woman birthing a breech baby. Lovely to attend a workshop with information given being consistent with my understanding of evidence-informed practice.”

“The content of the day was very appropriate and I found it excellent. I have found that coming to this workshop has re-affirmed my beliefs as a midwife. I feel more confident with the prospect of a breech birth.”

“[I valued most] going over the plan of how to tackle hospital policy and obstetric pressure by doing a very specific birth plan with women. I am wondering why my training was most medicalised with regard to breech birth and I only graduated last year!!”

“Fantastic presentation which taught me so much, installing a strength to know active, natural breech births are possible if you just have faith in the woman, the baby and yourself. The videos and images were really great visual aids. I really appreciate all the knowledge shared and reducing the fear we may have held at the risks associated with vaginal breech birth.”

“I found the experience that was given was invaluable. Nothing I have read in books was as easy to understand as what was discussed today.”

“This has been a fantastic learning day and food for the soul! Has refocused my commitment to woman-centred midwifery care. [The content was] very appropriate, well aimed and targeted for participants – I think evidence of this is clear from the enthusiastic participation.”

"I valued most the] general atmosphere for learning in a safe space.”

“I feel more confident to support a woman in her choice to birth her breech baby vaginally – not because I had a lack of faith in women’s ability to birth but because I was fearful of colleagues and obstetricians. I feel stronger backed by research.”

“Fantastic and thought-provoking as always. Maggie’s inclusive and warm style makes the day really.”

“Great presentation overall with take home booklet plus slides and videos. Excellent”

“Wonderfully presented and awesome videos and pictures. Very informative and open for discussion at all times. Lots to take home and read as well as plenty to think about.”
