| Midwives
need to respond effectively to maternal and newborn emergencies
not only within their scope of practice but also within the context
of their practice setting. We work in a variety of environments
~ including birthing units and at home, predominantly with other
midwives in support. Medical practitioners are seldom involved in
primary care and rarely in low technology settings.
The Birthspirit
Intensive Midwifery Skills for Emergencies has been developed for
the unique role of the midwife in New Zealand ~ that of an independent
practitioner, irrespective of her employment status. Acknowledging
the role medical practitioners play in the provision of emergency
care, the Intensive reflects the reality that over 75% of women
have a midwife as their Lead Maternity Carer and midwives attend
almost 100% of births. Thus the midwife is the health professional
most likely to be in attendance in any childbirth emergency.
Midwifery Skills
for Emergencies is a comprehensive refresher in the midwifery skills
necessary during perinatal emergencies in primary care settings.
It embraces the art and science of midwifery, providing evidence-informed
practice for safe and effective midwifery care in the absence of,
or until, medical assistance is available.

Feedback
from participants
Very relevant
and valuable. Good evidence-based info
Good preparation
with books of readings
Comprehensive
content – well thought out without being too rigidly structured
Awesome, vast
knowledge in the room. Sharing of various opinions added to the
knowledge base
Wonderfully
challenging about some things I do that have no useful base
Covered all
that was promised in a way that I should remember should an emergency
[arise]. Encouraged critical thinking
I thought the
scenarios were great. Real life – and the discussion they
sparked was great
I knew all sorts
about PPH, shoulder dystocia etc, so it was great to take it on
further and see it from another perspective – more holistic
I have seen
a more precious way of working within midwifery that I will always
treasure
Initially I
felt a round peg in a square hole. I have come to remember that
I am still a peg and maybe I need to change the hole
Very appropriate
for learning – guided, visual, aural. All there – all
good
[I valued] resus
– so much easier than diagrams – DOING IT works for
me
The course flowed
with a good mix of story telling, presentations, videos and practical
hands on
Very midwife-friendly
– no scary demonstrations or presentations in front of the
group and, thank goodness, no role plays! Videos were excellent
I feel sad that
this type of setting and format is not available as a midwifery
school/style of learning. There is so much knowledge to be gained
from each other which enhances our learning and supports our journeys
to being wise women
We could all
‘present’ in this loving environment
The various
methods of presentation gave me the confidence to share and enjoy
that sharing
Excellent [presentation]
– using interaction and people participation valuable
Presented in
clear way, offering space for sharing. Non judgemental but gently
challenging
I just appreciated
the way the Intensive was set up – was based on us learning
– also being the ‘instructors’ – a shared
learning experience
All the content
was covered and much, much more. Things were discussed in a way
that they were really do-able
Wonderful that
the content grows to encompass so much more than any original list,
by the telling of tales and practice wisdoms
Excellent again.
Exactly what my needs were and they were met
Covered what
I wanted to know, well presented and paced
Wonderful environment
and awesome presentation of information. The things learnt will
never leave me. They are firmly ingrained
The comradeship
– a group of women I had never met before but after 2 days
it feels like I know them well
Staying on site!
So much happens outside the ‘hours’
I felt nurtured
in spirit, body and mind. Good size of group
I had a valuable
time both personally and professionally with you and every other
cherished woman at the weekend |
