Journal
Information
Birthspirit
Midwifery Journal is published quarterly in February, May, August and
November. It focuses on the regeneration and furthering of knowledge that
promotes, supports and protects the healthy (on all levels) continuum
of pregnancy, labour and birth, breastfeeding and early mothering.
Aims
The journal aims to provide a forum for sharing practice wisdom, experience
and reflection. This may be through research reports, literature reviews
and critiques, practice stories, debate, poems, ‘case’ studies,
birth stories, photographic essays, drawings, tips, letters, book reviews,
and news and events.
The journal will be
of interest to midwives and midwifery students, childbirth educators,
doulas, lactation consultants, maternity managers, and other maternity
and newborn health professionals, as well as pregnant and/or breastfeeding
women and their families.

To ensure that
journal content is accessible to a wide range of readers and reflects
the ‘with woman’ relationship midwives share with women, women-friendly
language should be used and clear definitions given to academic concepts.
Language should also be proactive in recognising the autonomy of women.
As a general guide,
articles may be 500 - 3000 words, for example, feature articles (1500
-3000 words), practice stories (800 - 1200 words) and practice wisdom
and tips (500 - 800 words).
Text needs to be formatted
in Word 97-2003 (*.doc). Headings should be used where necessary. The
article should have a title page with author name(s) and contact details.
Photographs, drawings, images or charts should be ‘jpeg’ or
‘gif’ files labelled in order as they are referred to in the
text such as, ‘Figure 1’, ‘Figure 2’ and so on.
The appropriate label in the text, for example, ‘(Figure 1)’
will ensure correct placement of the jpeg or gif file in the text by the
publisher. Permission to use any photographs, images and/or drawings must
be gained before they are submitted.
Reference
Style
Citation-Sequence referencing is used, that is, a number refers the reader
to the reference list for this and further information on the source.
Each new source is allocated a number when referred to for the first time.
This same number will be used for subsequent references to that same source.
The following examples indicate the format to be used when making up the
reference
list which will appear at the end of the article:
